Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a fast back-and-forth movement of the head, most often in a rear-end collision. The muscles, ligaments, and small joints of the cervical spine are stretched past their normal range in a fraction of a second. It is the most common injury we see at Car Accident Doctors Group.
Whiplash symptoms usually appear 2 to 3 days after the crash, once the adrenaline is gone and the inflammation has set in. That delay matters in Florida. Under the 14-day PIP rule, you must receive initial treatment within 14 days of the crash to keep your Personal Injury Protection benefits. Waiting until the pain is bad enough to worry about is how people lose that window.
How whiplash happens in a collision
In a rear-end crash the seat pushes your torso forward before your head moves. For a split second the neck bends into an S-shape, then the head snaps forward and the seat belt stops the body. The whole cycle takes under a quarter of a second, too fast for the muscles to react, so the ligaments and facet joint capsules take the load.
This does not require a high-speed crash. Whiplash is common in parking-lot bumps and stop-and-go rear-end hits on Federal Highway, Sample Road, and the I-95 ramps in Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach. Little bumper damage does not mean little force reached the neck.
How we evaluate whiplash

Every whiplash patient gets an initial examination on the first visit: a history of the crash, orthopedic and neurological testing, and cervical range-of-motion measurement in six directions. Those numbers are recorded the same day and become the baseline for the case.
If the exam shows bone tenderness, arm weakness, or signs of a disc injury, we refer for imaging before treatment. X-rays rule out fracture and instability; an MRI is ordered when we suspect a disc or ligament tear. Our imaging and specialist referral process sends the report to us and to your attorney.
How we treat whiplash
Treatment begins the same visit as the exam once the neck is cleared. In the first week the goal is to reduce inflammation and muscle guarding. Class IV laser therapy on the LightForce system reduces swelling in the deep neck tissue. Electrical stimulation settles the spasm, and therapeutic ultrasound is used on the upper trapezius when the shoulders are involved.
As the acute phase settles, Dr. McNamara-Krauss adds gentle chiropractic adjustments to restore facet joint motion, and massage therapy with Dawn Marie Teufel, LMT, for the muscles that have locked down. When the exam or MRI shows a disc component, spinal decompression on the Antalgic-Trac system takes pressure off the disc. Shockwave is never used on the spine.
Recovery and what gets documented
Most whiplash cases improve over weeks, not days. Range of motion usually comes back before the pain fully leaves. We re-measure at set intervals so progress is a number, not an opinion. Patients who start care in the first week generally do better than patients who wait a month.

When the emergency room or a specialist comes first
Go to the emergency room first if you have severe neck pain with tenderness over the bones of the spine, weakness or numbness in both arms or legs, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, a headache that keeps getting worse, or any loss of consciousness in the crash. The nearest ER to our office is Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach. Once you have been cleared, we treat the whiplash.

Why did my neck feel fine right after the crash?
Adrenaline masks pain for the first several hours after a collision. The inflammation from stretched ligaments and muscle fibers builds over 24 to 72 hours, which is why most whiplash patients wake up stiff on day two or three. That delay is normal and does not mean the injury is minor. It does mean you need to be examined before the 14-day PIP window closes.
Do I need an X-ray or MRI for whiplash?
An X-ray is ordered when the exam shows bone tenderness, a high-speed impact, or a history that raises fracture risk. Most whiplash cases do not need one. An MRI is ordered when there are signs of a disc injury or nerve involvement such as arm numbness or weakness. We refer out for imaging and the results come back to us and your attorney.
How soon after a crash should I be seen for whiplash?
The best time is within the first few days, before the muscles lock down. Florida PIP requires initial treatment within 14 days of the crash, so the deadline is fixed even if the pain is slow to arrive. Will PIP cover chiropractic care for whiplash?
Chiropractic care is covered under Florida PIP. PIP pays 80% of reasonable medical expenses up to $10,000 when initial treatment starts within 14 days of the crash. A suspected fracture, spinal cord injury, or any injury with loss of consciousness belongs in the emergency room, not a chiropractic office. If you have weakness in both arms, cannot walk normally, or have lost bladder or bowel control, go to Broward Health North or call 911. We treat whiplash after the ER has ruled those out.
